Choosing synthetic oil

The choice of motor oil is complicated by the fact that the labels of canisters often do not have a list and percentage composition of components. Of course, this is a violation of the law, according to which the buyer should be able to get full information about the purchased product. There are synthetic oils, “semi-synthetics” (mineral oil + synthetic components), as well as quite cheap but less popular mineral oils. The latter are not very resistant to

oxidation and age faster. The use of mineral oil is justified only if the engine is heavily worn (i.e. requires high oil consumption) or runs at low voltages.

Synthetic oil should be used in the following cases

it is recommended by the vehicle manufacturer;
a sportive driving style is practiced: fast acceleration up to 100 km/h, skidding with skidding;
the annual mileage of the car – more than 20 thousand kilometers; synthetic motor oil helps save fuel;
the car is actively used in winter: synthetic oil facilitates cold starting of the engine.

But during the running-in period, something else is needed, namely the running-in of the parts to each other. With “synthetics”, this goal will not be achieved. During the running-in period, it is better to use mineral or semi-synthetic oil, change it more often together with a filter to remove abrasives.

Synthetic oils, known for their excellent detergency properties, are undesirable for older engines: they flush out deposits in glands and gaskets, as a result of which oil starts to leak out of the engine. In addition, leaching of deposits from the joints of the cylinder-circuit components often results in noise and knocking in the engine, increased fuel and oil consumption.

It is extremely risky to use synthetic motor oils in domestic cars produced in the late 80’s – early 90’s.

Their engines are equipped with stuffing boxes, on which modern components of synthetic oil affect extremely negatively.

Synthetic oil is recommended for highly accelerated engines, as well as for extreme vehicle operating conditions:

low and high ambient temperatures;
frequent driving under heavy load;
overcoming steep downhills and gradients;
at auto competitions.

Synthetic oils are highly valued for their good thermal and oxidative stability.

They are characterized by low volatility, reduced consumption and extended drain intervals. So, if in cars it is recommended to change mineral oil after 8-10 thousand km of run, quality synthetic oil will serve 15 thousand km and even more.
